Deborah, a graduate of the University of Western Ontario, has extensive international experience as a CIDA officer and a writer, broadcaster and author. She has volunteered with OCLF since 2000, and has made 17 visits to Ghana with Kathy. In 2013, she wrote “The Library Tree” which traced the development of OCLF since its creation in 1990.

Beth Lennard, Past Chair, Treasurer

Beth, a graduate of the University of Toronto, has extensive business experience, and is the President of First Executive Centre, an office leasing company. She was on the board of Theatre Calgary for many years. This connection was instrumental in fostering OCLF’s efforts to promote theatre within its libraries.

Director Kathy KnowlesKathy Knowles, Program Director

Kathy, a graduate of Queen’s University (BNSc), worked as a paediatric nurse before moving to Ghana with her family in 1989. She founded the OCLF in 1990. Since returning to Canada in 1993, she continues to visit Ghana twice a year. She has built eight libraries in Great Accra and has offered assistance to more than 200 smaller initiatives.

Richard_thumbnailRichard Beattie, Secretary

Richard, a former CIDA official, served as the Director of Development at the Canadian High Commission in Ghana from 1995-1998. Since his retirement in 2002, he has done consulting work as an adviser to several Central and Eastern European governments. He is Chair of the Board for the Foundation for International Training and is past-president of the Canadian Association of International Development Professionals.

Lyn Beattie, Director

Lyn, a graduate of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Library Science (MLS), has worked in government, corporate, public and law libraries including the Judicial Library in the Calgary Courts Centre.  She has served on the OCLF Board since its founding.

Attah, a graduate of the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, completed graduate studies in Norway and a Doctorate of Economics at the University of Manitoba. He now works in Ottawa as a Senior Analyst at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and as an instructor at Carleton University in Urban Economics, Transportation Economics, and Housing Economics.

Sally, a graduate of Queen’s Univerity (BA) and the London School of Economics (Master of Social Work), has worked in Ottawa as a family therapist for more than 35 years, specializing in children’s mental health. In 2013, she volunteered with a children’s preschool in Lesotho, South Africa. In 2014, she travelled to Ghana as an OCLF volunteer and returned in November 2015.

Florence Adjepong, Treasurer and Director

Florence Adjepong was born in the UK of Jamaican parents and studied there. She moved to Ghana with her Ghanaian husband, Samuel Adjepong. In 1998, she founded Alpha Beta Montessori Learning Centre with only six students. It now has an enrollment of 800 students between the ages of 2 and 18.

Emma Amoo-Gottfried was born in Ghana and studied in the UK and Ghana. In 1988, she founded Faith Montessori School which has grown to include a population of 550 students.

Joana_thumbprintJoana Felih has worked as the head librarian from the beginning of the library project. She was recognized for her leadership in 2010 when she jointly accepted the International Board for Books [IBBY] – Asahi Reading Promotion Award with Kathy Knowles in Spain.

Martin thumbMartin Adjei Legend is the theatre director for the Nima Maamobi Community Learning Centre and coordinates the annual Osu Library Fund Theatre Festival every August. He is also an accomplished playwright with many plays to his credit.
